Caldera Lab: What’s in the Jar of the Base Layer?

Caldera + Lab’s moisturizer is very different from most moisturizers. The ingredients we chose are just as important as the ingredients we’ve adamantly decided to omit.

Most moisturizers will make your skin feel smooth and soft on the surface, but they won’t do much for the long-term health of your skin. A little bit of lotion or balm is a temporary protectant. It doesn’t provide lasting benefits to the way your skin looks and feels.

The Base Layer is expertly formulated with organically grown and wild-harvested botanicals that provide deep hydration, protection from environmental pollution and restore the health of your skin.

Our moisturizer is completely plant-powered and clinically demonstrated to nourish your skin while promoting a youthful appearance.

Environmental Pollution Rescue

Everything in the air comes into contact with your skin, and your skin has no natural way of filtering pollution.

Free radicals in the air will come into contact with your skin, destroying healthy cells on the surface. Your moisturizer is a barrier between environmental pollution and your skin.

Antioxidant-rich ingredients work with your skin to sacrifice themselves as they protect and nourish your skin. They act as a shield of armor against the free-floating things in the environment that mean your skin harm.

  • Tara Fruit Pod Extract
  • Wild Indigo Condensates
  • Plant-Derived Biopolymers
  • Microgreens from Sunflower Sprouts
  • Green Tea Extract
  • Fireweed

Tara tree fruit pods are a unique antioxidant source that works with plant-derived biopolymers to protect your skin against blue light and infrared radiation, as well as particulate pollution.

Green tea is a powerful source of antioxidants. When applied to the skin, it helps to soothe the surface and protect from the damaging effects of pollution.

Green tea is just as valuable to drink as it is to use on your skin. If you’re looking to protect your body from the damaging effects of free radicals, try drinking a few cups a day in conjunction with using the ingredient in your skincare.

Wild indigo has been used throughout history as an immune system booster, helping to fortify the body’s natural defenses. Sunflower microgreens and fireweed provide antioxidants while helping to naturally boost the skin’s protective barrier.

Plant Stem Cell Technology

Stem cells are restorative and regenerative cells that can be derived from plants, people, or animals. Our stem cells are completely vegan and plant-derived.

A plant’s stem cells are designed to protect against UV damage and help plants grow. They work to keep plants from burning up in the sun and keep the plant thriving, and when applied topically, they can provide UV protection and restorative benefits to your skin.

  • Buddleja Meristems
  • Plant Sugar Complex
  • Sunflower Unsaponifiables
  • Amber Algae

The meristems of the buddleia plant provide three-tier protection against UV damage. Sunflower unsaponifiable helps to form a protective barrier on the surface of the skin.

Plant sugars are natural gentle exfoliants that help the skin to shed dead cells and generate fresh cells. Amber algae energize skin cells, supporting plant sugars in their regenerative quest.

Adaptogenic Nourishment

Adaptogens are flowers, fungi, and herbs that enhance your overall wellness. They occur naturally in foods you eat and things you can apply to your skin.

Adaptogens work to promote homeostasis by stabilizing the levels of stress in your body and promoting a healthier stress response.

  • Wild Indigo
  • Tremella Mushroom
  • Elettaria Cardamom
  • Immortelle Flower
  • Licorice

Immortelle flower is an antioxidant powerhouse that helps to promote even skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots. Licorice is often used to address uneven pigmentation in the skin, fading dark marks, and reducing the visibility of things like acne scars.

Meanwhile, cardamom follows suit, and is often used to help clear blemishes in addition to promoting an even skin tone.

Tremella mushrooms help to promote greater levels of hyaluronic acid in the body. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring acid that traps and preserves moisture levels, keeping skin consistently hydrated.

Wild indigo supports immune function and helps promote homeostasis within the skin.

Deep Hydration

Your moisturizer’s primary function is to protect your skin and create a surface barrier. Many moisturizers are thick and balmy, staying on top of the surface without penetrating the top layer.

The Base Layer is a moisturizer that also provides deep and nourishing hydration to the skin.

  • Glacial Mineral Water
  • Rainforest Bacuri Butter
  • Mushroom Polysaccharides
  • Oat Protein
  • Plant Squalane
  • Elkhorn Sea Moss

Our glacial mineral water contains over 60 minerals necessary for the health of your skin. We sustainably source our glacier water in an eco-friendly way.

Our bacuri butter is a deeply moisturizing plant butter sustainably sourced and extracted in the wild from the Amazon rainforest.

Plant squalane is a naturally occurring moisturizer found in plants that closely mimics the human skin moisture barrier. It’s the kind of nourishment and protection that your skin specifically craves.

Elkhorn sea moss is a deeply nourishing red algae that is naturally rich in antioxidants. Elkhorn sea moss has been used to promote wound healing and inhibit melanin production, preventing or minimizing new dark spots or uneven skin tone.

Oat protein and mushroom polysaccharides contain high levels of beta-glucan, a carbohydrate your body uses to soothe inflammation and restore skin barrier function. Both ingredients have humectant properties that help to draw moisture to the skin.

What Isn’t in the Jar of the Base Layer

Some moisturizers have valuable botanical ingredients proven to be beneficial to the skin, but they’re also loaded with drawbacks. It is counterintuitive to promote healthy skin with a product that contains a buffet of unhealthy ingredients.

We don’t use any fillers, toxins, or synthetic ingredients in The Base Layer. In fact, you’ll never find these things in our skincare line:

  • Animal-derived ingredients
  • Aluminum
  • Parabens
  • Formaldehyde
  • GMOs
  • Phthalates
  • Toxic chemicals
  • Silicones
  • Gluten

We are so committed to environmentally friendly and healthy ingredients that we became a certified B Corporation. We have a responsibility to be ethical and transparent in the sourcing of our ingredients.

Everything we use is sustainably harvested from the wild or organically grown to our standards.

In fact, every single thing in the jar of The Base Layer is completely natural. -- all ingredients come from a plant. There are no additives, colors, artificial fragrances, or synthetically derived compounds. It’s only plant-based goodness, and that’s all it ever should be.

Using The Base Layer

The Base Layer is designed to be the last step in your skincare routine. After you cleanse with The Clean Slate, blot your face dry, apply The Good serum, and allow your skin to soak the serum up, you’ll top it off with a few small dabs of The Base Layer.

You should be caring for your skin as often as you brush your teeth. Incorporate your three-part skincare routine into your morning ritual and your bedtime ritual to experience the benefits fully.

Over time, you’ll begin to see the benefits of our clinically proven natural skincare formulas. Caldera + Lab’s skincare works with every skin tone and skin type to improve skin’s health and appearance naturally.
